Dietary administration of vegetable stanol esters (1% w/w) containing campestanol (30.1%) and sitostanol lower serum cholesterol, LDL, VLDL, and intermediate-density lipoprotein (IDL) cholesterol levels in an APOE*3-Leiden transgenic mouse model of atherosclerosis. This combination of campestanol with sitostanol also reduces atherosclerotic lesion area by 91% and the proportion of lesions with extensive macrophage infiltration. |
