Leucovorin (Folinic acid), the active metabolite of folic acid, is used primarily as the calcium salt form as an antidote/rescue agent to folic acid antagonists which block the conversion of folic acid to folinic acid. It is a medication used to decrease the toxic effects of methotrexate (MTX) and pyrimethamine. It is also used in combination with 5-fluorouracil to treat colorectal cancer, may be used to treat folate deficiency that results in anemia, and methanol poisoning.
