Meleagrin (6-O-Methyloxaline) is a naturally occurring antibiotic/alkaloid isolated from a deep ocean, penicillin-producing P. chrysogenum with antitumor and antibacterial activity. It can be extracted from a number of species of penicillium and can inhibit the growth of S. aureus, E.coli and S.pneumoniae. Meleagrin acts as a FabI inhibitor. Bacterial enoyl-acyl carrier protein reductase (FabI) is a promising novel antibacterial target.
