Verrucarin A (also known as Muconomycin A), is a naturally occurring antibiotic and a macrocyclic mycotoxin derived from the pathogen fungus Myrothecium verrucaria. It acts as a protein synthesis inhibitor with the ability to inhibit growth of cancer cells such as leukemia and breast cancer cells) and activate caspases and apoptosis and inflammatory signaling in macrophages. Verrucarin A can effectively increase the phosphorylation of p38 MAPK and diminished the phosphorylation of ERK/Akt.
