Endothelin 1 (swine, human), a synthetic 21 amino acid peptide with the sequence of human and swine Endothelin 1 with potent vasoconstrictive action, is a potent endogenous vasoconstrictor. Endothelin 1 acts through two types of receptors ETA and ETB. It produces convulsions, arterial hypertension, and metabolic activation of periventricular white and gray matter. Its effects are mediated via L-type Ca²⁺ channels. Reported to activate phospholipase C in fibroblasts expressing ET_A receptors.
