Mensacarcin, a highly complex polyketide, strongly inhibits cell growth universally in cancer cell lines and highly potently induces apoptosis in melanoma cells. Mensacarcin targets to mitochondria, affects energy metabolism in mitochondria, and activates caspase-dependent apoptotic pathways.
