Cefpodoxime proxetil is the esterified prodrug of cefpodoxime, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic with broad spectrum activity against most Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding penicillin-binding proteins, preferentially penicillin binding protein 3, and resulting in the inhibition of peptidoglycan synthesis. Cefpodoxime is stable in the presence of most β-lactamase enzymes but inactivated by certain extended spectrum β-lactamases.
