性质描述: 黄色棱形结晶。熔点95-96℃，沸点346-348℃（分解），188℃（1.6kPa），相对密度1.084（102/4℃）。能溶于醇、醚、氯仿、乙酸乙酯、苯、硝基苯，不溶于水。
生产方法: 由苯甲醛与氰化钠缩合得苯偶姻（安息香）后，再经硝酸氧化而得。这一工艺过程因产生亚硝酸气体而造成污染，反应激烈，需仔细操作。生产试剂联苯酰也有采用乙酸铜或硫酸铜的，例如，将4100g结晶硫酸铜、4000g吡啶及1600g水一起搅拌加热，然后加入1696g苯偶姻，加热反应2h，反应物变成深绿色，冷却后倾出硫酸亚酮-吡啶溶液。结晶用水洗涤后与10%盐酸共热。冷却后滤出结晶，可得1450g联苯酰。用空气或硝酸使苯偶姻氧化即得该品。将苯偶姻和硝酸（40%）加入反应锅，经4h慢慢升温至110℃，并保持反应1h。然后冷至40℃以下，甩滤、水洗，得联苯酰粗品。将粗品加水，用30%氢氧化钠调节pH至12，加热至100℃溶解，冷却后过滤，水洗得成品。收率95%以上。
用途: 有机合成中间体，也用于杀虫剂。该品用作紫外线固化树脂（UV树脂）的光敏剂很有前途。联苯酰对紫外线敏化的波长范围广。苯偶姻在3400A以下，苯偶姻烷基醚在3900A以下。而联苯酰在4800A以下，可在很宽的波长区敏化，因此可用于厚膜树脂的固化，这是以前UA树脂敏化中所不具有的特性。而且固化后没有气味，故适于制作食品包装用的印刷油墨等。

应用
Benzil is used as a pharmaceutical intermediate and uv curing resin photosensitizer. In polymer chemistry, it is used as a photoinitiator. Further, it serves as a potent inhibitor of human carboxylesterases. It is used in the preparation of diketimines by reacting with amines. It is also involved in the famous benil-benzilic acid rearrangement. In addition this, it reacts with 1,3-diphenylacetone to get tetraphenylcyclopentadienone.
