性质描述: 白色片状或颗粒。熔点59.4-59.8℃（凝固点57.95℃），沸点210℃（2kPa）170-171℃（0.266kPa），相对密度0.8124（59/4℃），折光率1.4346（45℃）。溶于醇、苯、氯仿，不溶于水。
生产方法: 可由巨头鲸油水解制得，也可在铬酸铜催化下由硬脂酸加氢而得，或用饱和乙醇还原硬脂酸乙酯。还可在烷基铝的作用下，通过控制乙烯的聚合反应得到十七烯馏分，再经羰基合成制得十八醇。
用途: 十八醇可代替十六碳醇使用，如制药中用作分散剂，在化妆品中用作霜膏、乳化剂，还用作稻田保温剂、水库覆盖剂、消泡剂、抛光剂、润滑剂等。十八醇可用于生产平平加、树脂和合成橡胶、采色胶片成色剂等。十八醇与β-（3,5-二叔丁基-4-羟基苯基）丙酸甲酯用甲醇钠作催化剂、二甲亚砜作溶剂，于130℃反应2-3h可制得抗氧剂1076（2082-79-3）。这是一种优良的非污染性无毒抗氧剂，广泛用于聚烯烃、聚酰胺、聚酯、聚氯乙烯、聚苯乙烯、ABS树脂以扩各种橡胶的石油制品。
