性质描述: 无色针状结晶。熔点33.5℃，沸点381.5℃（分解），358℃（53.3kPa），265℃（2.0kPa），相对密度0.86（55℃），折射率1.4534（45℃）。极易溶于醚，溶于乙醇、甲醇，不溶于水。在油菜籽制得的菜油或芥子油中，以及若干其他十字花科植物的种子中都含有较多芥酸。某些海生动物脂肪如鳕肝油中也含有芥酸。
生产方法: 以菜油或油脚为原料，用传统的方法（皂化酸解、酸化水解或加压水解）水解制成菜油脂肪酸，再从菜油脂肪酸分离出芥酸。对混合脂肪酸采用冷冻、压榨、初步分离后，再采用减压精馏可得较纯的芥酸。
用途: 芥酸的直接用途不多，主要用作精细化学品的中间体，用来制取各种表面活性剂、润滑剂、增塑剂、乳化剂、软化剂、防水剂、去污剂等。其衍生物芥酸酰胺（[112-84-5]）是塑料的润滑剂；芥酸氢化制成二十二烷酸，进一步加工制成山酸，用于舰艇上防止盐水腐蚀和防止藻类等附着在船体上。芥酸裂解可制取壬酸和十三碳二元酸，后者可制造人造麝香、耐低温耐光的优良增塑剂、尼龙-13和尼龙-1313。这类尼龙具备一般尼龙所不具备的特点，比其他尼龙更抗水，熔点低，能在低温下加工。
