生化/生理作用

转铁蛋白介导铁从血浆向细胞的运输。与铁结合的转铁蛋白具有三种形式：单铁A/B转铁蛋白和二铁转铁蛋白。转铁蛋白可与特定的细胞表面受体结合，通过内吞作用内化。进入细胞后，铁被释放到细胞中，无铁转铁蛋白(也称为脱铁转铁蛋白)则通过胞吐作用释放到细胞外，而不会被降解。目前确知转铁蛋白可将铁以生理学安全有效的形式递送至细胞。

生化/生理作用

转铁蛋白(TF)是血液中的铁转运蛋白。铁通过与循环转铁蛋白结合而在血清中进行转运，转铁蛋白又可与细胞表面上的受体进行结合。在碱性细胞外pH7.4的条件下，TF可结合一个或两个铁离子。铁结合的TF分子可与二聚体转铁蛋白受体(TfR)结合。在该pH下，TfR无法识别无铁转铁蛋白。随后便为TfR的内吞途径，其中整个复合物通过胞吞作用进入细胞内。随着细胞中pH的降低，铁会从TF中释放出来。然后复合物返回细胞表面，apo-TF分子与受体分离。
研究表明，用全转铁蛋白(其可增加细胞内的铁水平和青蒿素衍生物)共同处理乳腺癌细胞会增加细胞的死亡。
