性质描述: 无色透明液体。右旋香茅醇沸点244.4℃，相对密度0.8590（20/4℃）；左旋香茅醇沸点108-109℃（1.33kPa），相对密度0.859（18/4℃）。易溶于醇、醚、几乎不溶于水。具有玫瑰甜香。左旋香茅醇的香气比右旋香茅醇的幽雅。天然精油含有右旋或左旋香茅醇及其消旋体。右旋香茅醇主要存在于芸香油、香茅油和柠檬桉油中，左旋香茅醇主要有存在于玫瑰油和天竺葵属植物的精油中。
生产方法: （1）右旋和消旋香茅醇由精油中的香茅醛部分制造。从爪哇香草油蒸馏得到的右旋香茅醛，以兰尼镍催化剂接触氢化，转变为右旋香茅醇。同样，由柠檬桉油中的消旋香茅醛部分得消旋香茅醇。（2）由精油中的右旋或消旋香叶醇制造。从爪哇香茅油得到的香叶醉经催化氢化反应，然后分馏得到。选择兰尼钴作催化剂，可使2位双键氢化。（3）由合成的香叶醇和橙花醇的混合物经部分氢化得到；或由异丙醇用钡活化的亚格酸铜在180℃加压下反应生产。这种方法的产率为90%。（4）由光学活性的蒎烯制造左旋香茅醇。将α-或β-蒎烯氢化得（-）-顺蒎烷，热裂解转变为（+）-3,7-二甲基-1,6-辛二烯，与三异丁基铝或二异丁基氢化铝作用，然后将所生成的醇铝氧化并水解，可以得到纯度为97%的香茅醇。
用途: 香茅醇是最常用的香料，最适用于玫瑰香，也可作柑桔香的香精和许多香茅醇酯类的原料，并可用于制造羟基二氢香茅醇并进而制造羟基二氢香茅醛。香茅醇是调配各种玫瑰系花香香精不可缺少的原料，几乎可应用在一切化妆品中。作为食用香料，按日本《食品添加物公定书》的规定，要求纯度在94%以上，不得用于加香以外的目的。
