Procalcitonin (PCT) is a peptide precursor of the hormone calcitonin, synthesized by thyroid parafollicular cells and involved in calcium homeostasis. The main function of calcitonin is to reduce calcium uptake by osteoclasts, thereby increasing circulating calcium levels. The half-life of a PCT is 25-30 hours. Serum PCT concentrations are significantly elevated in response to infectious irritation, fungal infection, trauma, and surgery

降钙素原(PCT)是降钙素的116个氨基酸前体，具有激素和细胞因子样活性。正常情况下，它是由甲状腺的c细胞局部产生的。因此，PCT的血清浓度通常无法检测到。它也可以在对细菌感染的反应中产生，并且在许多身体组织，特别是肺中大量产生。细菌感染以外的炎症来源，如自身免疫性疾病和病毒感染，不会提高PCT水平。
